When you apply to Illinois, you’ll answer a few short essay prompts.

First-Year Essays

First-year application includes 2–3 Illinois essays and one Common App essay.

First-Year: Illinois Essays

You’ll answer these in the Writing section of the Illinois questions on the Common App.

Each essay should be about 150 words.

First‑Choice Major Essays

  1. Explain, in detail, an experience you’ve had in the past 3 to 4 years related to your first-choice major. This can be an experience from an extracurricular activity, in a class you’ve taken, or through something else.
  2. Describe your personal and/or career goals after graduating from Illinois and how your selected first-choice major will help you achieve them.

Complete these prompts instead of the standard first-choice major essay prompts.

  1. What are your future career or academic goals? You may include courses you took in high school and how these impacted your goals.
  2. What are your academic interests? Please include 2-3 majors you’re considering at Illinois and why.

Second‑Choice Major Essay

When you apply with a second‑choice major, you’ll answer this additional prompt.

  1. Please explain your interest in your second-choice major or your overall academic or career goals.

First-Year: Common App Essay

You’ll also pick one essay prompt from Common App’s list of prompts.

Your essay should be 250 to 650 words.

Transfer App Essays

Transfer application includes 1–2 short essays, 300–400 words each.

Transfer: First-Choice Major Essay

Explain your interest in the major you selected. Describe how you have recently developed this interest, inside and/or outside of the classroom, and how this major relates to your professional goals.

Undeclared applicants…

Undeclared applicants complete this prompt instead of the standard first-choice major essay prompts.

  • Explain your academic interests and strengths or your future career goals. You may include any majors or areas of study you are currently considering.

Transfer: Second-Choice Major Question

When you apply with a second‑choice major, you’ll answer this additional prompt:

  • You have selected a second-choice major. Please explain your interest in this major.

Pro Tips: Illinois Essay Prompts

Be memorable. Use your essay to show who you are and what matters to you.

Be prepared. Take time to think, outline, draft, and revise.

Be yourself. Be honest and use real examples from school or activities.

Be direct. You only have a few paragraphs, so make every word count.

Be focused. Do not repeat things already in your application. Explain what you’ll bring to Illinois.

Be professional. Proofread. Fix errors. Ask someone you trust to look it over.
