Transferring Credit
Determine how your credits may transfer to Illinois.
Estimate Credits with Transferology
You can use Transferology to see how your college courses may transfer to Illinois. Transferology gives you a strong estimate, but Illinois makes the final decision after we review your official transcripts.
Explore TransferologyCreating a Transferology Account
- Create a Transferology account
- Add the classes you have taken or plan to take
- Select “Search for Matches”
- Choose “University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign”
Your results will show:
- Direct matches to Illinois courses
- Elective credit if there is no exact match
- Courses not yet reviewed (which may need more information later)
If you see a course listed as 1‑‑ or 2‑‑, it means the class transfers as elective credit in that subject because Illinois does not offer an exact equivalent.
Find a Replacement Course
Transferology can also help you find:
- Courses that meet required or recommended admission courses
- Courses that meet General Education requirements
To do this:
- Search for a specific Illinois course (example: PSYC 100), or
- Search by requirement category (example: Quantitative Reasoning I)
- Select your college to see which of your school’s courses fill that requirement
If a Course Isn’t Listed
Some classes have not been reviewed yet.
- Save your syllabus, course description, and outline.
- If you apply to Illinois, we may ask you to upload these materials so we can determine how the course transfers.
Credit Limits & Requirements
Illinois does not cap how many credits you can transfer. However, minimum or maximum credit hours transferred may impact competitiveness for admission for particular programs.
Regardless of credit hours transferred, all students must complete the campus residency requirement:
- 45 credit hours at Illinois, and
- 21 of those hours at the 300‑ or 400‑level.
Your Illinois GPA
Per the Student Code, students are required to send transcripts for all coursework completed.
Students with transfer coursework will see:
- An Illinois GPA (only Illinois classes)
- A transfer GPA (only transfer classes)
- An overall GPA (all classes)
We do not use grade replacement or forgiveness from other schools. All transferable grades count toward your GPAs.
Other Ways to Earn Credit
- AP exams
- IB exams
- A‑Level courses
- Dual‑enrollment courses
